Acupuncture:

What is it? Acupuncture is a safe and effective form of medical treatment that has evolved into a complete holistic healthcare system. Acupuncture exists under the umbrella of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture is a form of treatment used within TCM along with herbal medicine, Asian bodywork, dietary therapy, and other ways of stimulating acupuncture points like cupping or moxibustion. Acupuncture has the ability to enhance recuperative power and immunity, support physical and emotional health, and improve overall function and well-being.

How does it work? Energy flows through channels in the body called meridians. These meridians act like rivers carrying nourishment and sustenance allover the body. Along these meridians are trigger points that have been found through years of experience to stimulate specific responses in the body. The insertion of hair thin stainless steel solid needles acts as a trigger for stimulation therapy. Its not that the needles put something into the body or take something out, but instead the sensation felt by the body acts as a signal telling that organ or meridian to do things like turn down body temperature or adjust the circulation to different areas of the body.

Does it hurt? Acupuncture works through stimulation so sensation during a treatment is a good thing; however, that feeling isn’t overly painful. Different people feel different sensations during a treatment. Some describe a tingling sensation or a swelling sensation or even that of relaxation.

Is it safe? Yes. Especially when done by a trained and licensed acupuncturist. Acupuncture needles are used one time and then disposed after treatment.

Tui Na - Tui Na is a form of therapeutic massage with an emphasis on acupuncture points and meridians. Tui Na can successfully treat musculoskeletal, digestive, and emotional conditions. It is typically a service that is adjunctive to each acupuncture treatment. It can aid in the treatment of something like sports injuries or replace needles for patients apprehensive about acupuncture.

Nutritional and Lifestyle Coaching - The nutritional aspect of this medicine can be the most important component to reaching a patient’s health goals. This process of lifestyle coaching includes teaching patients healthy ways of eating as opposed to using nutritional supplements. Patients are taught the properties of foods and proper recipes for not only overall health but also for their specific condition. Lifestyle recommendations include stress management, sleeping and eating patterns, exercise, sexual behavior, meditation and Qi Gong. By educating our patients with tools they can use at home we empower them to take control of their own health, which eventually leads to enlightenment on the part of the patient and success on their own terms.

Chinese Herbal Medicine - In the United States herbal medicine has received much attention in recent years as an alternative to drug therapies. However, in China herbal medicine has been widely used for the past 2,000 years and in that time refined by Chinese Medical Doctors. With the growing awareness of herbal medicine here in the West the market for herbal prescriptions is growing. At AHA we plan to use our knowledge of formula’s using plants and minerals to engage in this growing trend.

“I started seeing Erika about a year ago for severe pain in my heels. This pain was so severe when I first got out of bed in the morning that I could hardly walk. An orthopedic doctor had given me some exercises to do and had me do physical therapy to relieve the pain, but to no avail. He said it was plantar falsities and Achilles tendinitis. I then decided to see Erika figuring it couldn't hurt. The first day after my first acupuncture appointment, my feet hurt so bad, I wondered if I had made a huge mistake, but by the second day I had the sensation of "walking on air" and all the pain was gone.”
